Trauma Therapy

Many people go through traumatic experiences in their lives, whether it be a car accident, abuse or neglect, the sudden loss of a loved one, a violent crime, exposure to the horrors of war, or a natural disaster.

It’s important to understand that while some individuals may find healing over time, bolstered by the love and support of family and friends, others can struggle with the lasting effects of trauma. This can manifest as deep emotional pain, fear, confusion, or post-traumatic stress that persists even long after the event has passed.

If you or someone you know is facing this type of pain, please remember that seeking the support of a therapist can be a vital step in the journey towards healing. You don’t have to navigate this alone; there is help available.

Trauma Symptoms

According to the four types of symptoms outlined in the DSM-5, trauma symptoms can be categorized as follows:

Avoidance Symptoms

  • Avoiding specific locations, sights, situations, and sounds that remind the individual of the traumatic event.
  • Experiencing anxiety, depression, numbness, or guilt.

Re-experiencing Symptoms

  • Having intrusive thoughts, nightmares, or flashbacks related to the event.

Hyperarousal Symptoms

  • Displaying anger, irritability, and hypervigilance.
  • Engaging in aggressive or reckless behavior, which may include self-harm.
  • Experiencing sleep disturbances.

Negative Mood and Cognition Symptoms

  • Losing interest in activities that were once enjoyable.
  • Difficulty remembering details of the traumatic event.
  • Noticing changes in habits or behavior since the trauma occurred.

We understand that dealing with trauma can be incredibly challenging and overwhelming. Research has shown that psychotherapy is the most effective way to navigate these difficulties. If you or someone you know is experiencing the trauma symptoms mentioned above, please know that you are not alone. We genuinely want to help you through this process.
